Summer is a time when people pack up the family and and head out on vacation. A great time to have some fun and build some great family memories!

While away, security is often top of mind for homeowners, ensuring all the doors and windows are locked and someone is stopping by to pick up the papers. This is important to enjoy a worry free vacation. But are you ready for a potential disaster upon your return home?

You might be thinking, what could happen? It's summer! No furnaces to quit working, no pipes to freeze, no snow to shovel. What can go wrong?

What I'm referring to is the hot and cold water hoses that connect your washing machine to the taps. Have you noticed? Washing machine manufacturers are so thoughtful for supplying plastic or rubber hoses with a new washer. Or maybe you bought your home with the washer already in place and you've never looked behind it to see what you have back there.

The problem is that over time, these hoses break down and can burst at any moment. As luck would have it, that is usually when you are away from your home. Since these taps are usually left turned on, the hose can burst and the water will run and run until someone discovers the flood. If you're away for a few days or weeks, the flooding can be a disaster!

Best thing is to throw those rubber or plastic hoses in the garbage and replace them with braided stainless steel hoses. A quick fix for under $25 and allow you to go away with confidence.

Even after you replace the hoses, you might want to just turn off the water when you go away for an extended time. With water, you never want to mess with it.

Have a great summer!
