Antique wagon wheelSalmon Arm is a city with a rich and interesting past, but apart from a few well-informed locals, most residents and visitors are unaware of the town’s impressive heritage. There are many ways to learn more: The Okanagan Regional Library, the online archives of the Vancouver Public Library… but what better way than to experience history for yourself? At the R.J. Haney Heritage Village and Museum, you can do just that.

This exceptional museum has documented the city’s complete history, by preserving and collecting literature, relics, and documentation, spanning back before the founding of Salmon Arm. Showcasing cultural artifacts from the region's first inhabitants, the establishment of the fur trade and railways, construction of the first trading post, and the creation of business and agriculture in the area, the museum has piles of archives covering every little detail.

If you’re less the history buff, and more the activity-hunter, the museum offers an endless amount of fun activities for the whole family. Some upcoming events include:

Father’s Day | June 21st

Father’s Day is done a little differently at Salmon Arm Museum. Featuring a pioneer-style pancake breakfast, old-fashioned rides and entertainment, a carnival, music, art, lunch and “gold” panning, this is one event that will go down in history!

Dinner Theatre | July 1 onward

A delightful combination of a delicious pioneer-inspired dinner complemented by top-notch performances from local actors, Dinner Theatre is a funny and educational experience that will leave attendees feeling closer to their community and much more knowledgeable about its legacy!

Pioneer Day | July 12

With plenty of food, games, and live entertainment, Pioneer Day will transport you back in time to the early days of Salmon Arm. Take a wagon ride to see how early settlers got around town – or try a pie eating contest for some old-timey amusement! And, as always, there are plenty of opportunities to learn. All the activities offered by the museum are a great time – but their best trait is perhaps their ability to get the whole community involved in fun events that are educational. Children and adults alike will leave any of these events feeling like a true local historian. Why not become an expert on your community? Come out and take part!
